Thinking about Thinking

Sitting at my table thinking about what could a person like me contribute to the wider society in this fast paced, ‘‘overeducated’’ world.

‘‘Thinking!’’- I thought. This word and all the processes behind it were always a point of certain interest and amusement to me. I am not the most well read or most traveled or most educated person in the world -far from it. But there is a certain thought constantly lingering in the back of my mind,- a question. What went wrong? What changed?

In the last few years of my life -about 10 of them- I noticed a major shift on how people approach and solve problems at hand. I work with people on a daily basis employers, employees, partners and customers likewise, so I have plenty of experience to go on by and try and identify and analyze ‘‘the problem’’.

When I was younger -my twenties- there was one ‘‘thing’’ I was always told by my teachers, tutors and older, more experienced peers. ‘‘Common Sense!’’ By Cambridge Dictionary definition: the basic level of practical knowledge and judgment that we all need to help us live in a reasonable and safe way.

I never knew the definition, but like to think that I always understood what it meant by heart. A few years down my life I started working, this meant way more interaction with people coming from diverse cultural and educational background. As I was working my way up through the ranks in a very rapid manner I noticed a certain tendency between less successful/fortunate colleagues. This tendency was a general lack of -and ability of practical application of ‘‘common sense’’

I remember thinking and saying;’’ -Common sense is not common anymore!’’ every time something was not done or executed in a sensible way. Until one day few years down my career a new thought struck my mind -while I was watching a family member struggling to use a PC or a smartphone. Every single little action was an uphill battle (including double clicking)- what if ‘‘common sense’’ didn’t disappear, but transformed.

‘‘Digital Revolution’’

An era spanning all the way from the ‘70s to present day(many would argue it started in 1947 with the invention of the first Transistor)the greatest invention of which to this day is ‘‘The Internet’’

Everything dramatically changed with the introduction of Smartphones and the ability of being connected all the time. Common sense now became ‘‘Digital’’. Majority of our interactions are involving some kind of interaction with the ‘‘Digital World’’ -DigiWorld for short -JK

This new ‘‘common sense’’ -although very useful in the digital world- not very useful in real life. ‘‘Digital common sense’’ leads to ‘‘Digital Thinking’’ and this is not really useful when it comes to solution of real life problems.

I constantly encounter people unable to solve simple day to day problems, people unable to complete duties and tasks assigned to them without me giving them a really long and thorough guide on whats and whys of the given task.

I keep thinking about what could be done to reintroduce ‘‘common sense’’ into people’s lives? What kind of guidance is required to improve people’s ability to think more ‘‘Real life’’ and less ‘‘Digital’’? Questions still unanswered…

Well, for now I keep thinking about thinking.

AKG K812

My brother and I were looking to step up our audio-enthusiast "game" for some time. But despite our careful planning, there was always something that would prevent us from investing in this hobby of ours. Up until November and Black Friday sales came, where after rigorous research and browsing we managed to find two contestants, that would mean the first step in our "Summit-fi" headphone journey. One was Beyerdynamic T1v2 and the other the AKG K812. After doing an extensive research we decided that the K812 seems to be the closest to our preferred sound signature. -On the side note, there were some off putting reviews on both of the chosen headphones-

The AKG K812 Pro

Aesthetically these headphone retained a lot of AKG design elements, they feel and look as a premium high-end product. The cable is the only component that does not feel premium "out of the box", but given some time I have grown to love it. It is light, flexible and straightens out quite easily. Important, these headphones are low impedance and high sensitivity -these have a very low Max. Power rating with 300mW, so you have to be careful if using with a high-powered amp-, so you can run them literally off any equipment. My iBasso DX90 is able to run them just fine on highest gain settings -although they definitely benefit from a good amp. I also have to mention that these headphones come packaged with a real wood high end "omega" shaped headphone stand. It is a nice gesture from AKG.

I would not suggest taking these on the go. I tried to take them on a walk and they looked and felt awkward on my head, not mentioning that they are as open as open headphones can be. They leak sound and you can hear everything happening around you. Also I could imagine having them with me on my holidays -nothing is better, than listening to your favorite music on your favorite headphones on a quiet, sunshiny beach. Pure relaxation.

The sound signature

The K812 is one of the most neutral headphones I've ever had a chance to listen to -neutral, not boring.

There high end on these is quite resolving and has a great amount of detail. Although they could sound a bit harsh and strident at times, this was not the case for the majority of the music I have. I did not notice a definite pattern for the tendency of occasional harshness. I have seen some reviews saying that this happens when a song has a great amount treble information. I can not definitely confirm that.

Although these headphones are not bass monsters, still the bass has decent ammount extension, presence and tightness to it. If you are looking for a thick, thumping bass, this is not a headphone for you and you should look towards buying the Audioquest Nighthawk -or Fostex THX00. Both of those have a a very "meaty" bass with great extension and detail.

Mid range is smooth, with a bit of forwardness to it. Female and male vocals sound equally great with excellent tonality, texture and clarity. These headphones are also the best -I heard so far(CanJam London 2017 Here I come!)- for listening anything containing string instruments -Chordophones-

It is important to mention that the K812 has a great soundstage coupled with almost "Holographic" imaging presentation. Before buying the headphones I could not imagine what other reviewers meant when talking about "holographic" imaging. But, now I know. Trust me! you want this.

For closing thoughts I would like to say, that never in my life I enjoyed listening to music as much as I do since my brother and I purchased our first pair of Summit-Fi (HI-FI) headphones. I spend more time listening to music than I ever did before. I am wondering since; If our experiences define us, than how can  an experience of this magnitude change us and our perception of ourself, and the world around us.

Audioquest Nighthawk

Opening thoughts

I always loved music, but the thought of it sounding better did not come until was well into my twenties. At one point I remember replacing my  NOKIA earbuds every 2-3 months, as they continued to fail. After some time, I started to think about buying a pair of headphones that do not fail on me every couple of months. During  my browsing on Amazon I stumbled upon a lot of choices, of which some costed substantially more than the others. This sparked an urge to know "why?" This  led to my first Koss Porta Pro headphones -that I still love, respect and suggest to anyone looking to improve their listening experience from generic earbuds. Couple of years down the line the list expanded to: Sennheiser Momentum, Sennheiser HD598, Hifiman RE00, AKG K812, Focal Elear and Audioquest Nighthawk.

The Audioquest Nighthawk

If you look at the list of headphones above you might ask -why am I writing about the Nighthawk first and not the others? Well, the answer is quite simple. I think this might be the best bang for buck headphone -in the higher end price category- on the market right now.

For its current retail price -usually between £400 and £500 it competes with headphones like Audeze LCD 2 and LCD 3, Focal Elear, Sennheiser HD800, Beyerdynamic T1 and AKG K812. I am not saying, that it is a better headphone -for critical listening than- the HD800 or K812, or that it has a better bass extension than LCD2 and LCD3 or that It has the punchiness of the Focal Elear. What I am saying that -to an extent- the Nighthawk has it all. It presents music in a manner none of the headphones -my brother or I had a chance to listen to- could. They liquid wood based headphones are gorgeous and sit with perfect balance and comfort on the head.

The Nighthawk's sound signature is on warm side. It has a very "meaty" base with good extension and good punch, it is never bloated or has any bleed in the other frequencies. The amount of base is enough to satisfy any but the wildest bassheads out there. In one word the base presentation is: "Full"

Mids are a bit forward sounding with plenty of clarity and detail. The nighthawks excel in the presentation male and female vocals equally well. If I had to choose one word to describe the mids I would choose: "Smooth"

The presentation of the upper frequencies in this headphone is quite unique. When I put them on for the first time and started to play music, the first thought that hit me was: "these are muffled?", this thought lingered in my head until after about 10 seconds into the listening session where I was thrown an amount of treble detail that left me more confused than an episode of "Falling Water" -It is a great show, give it a go if you can.  The treble on the Nighthawk is never harsh, piercing or sibilant, but it is still crystal clear and present. The one word I would use to describe the treble  is: "Clear"

Closing thoughts

First, I thought that it is important to mention that It is possible to use them on the go -they isolate quite well and don't leak sound as much as some other open/semi-open options out there. They look kind of dorky and awkward and potentially draw plenty of attention when you are commuting.

Second, I noticed during my testing sessions -although the specs would suggest otherwise- that these babies do love power. So do not expect anything extraordinary when powering them off your mobile device.

I forgot to mention two very important aspects of these headphones. One of them is the soundstage and the other is imaging. I found the soundstage on these quite good -considering these are semi-open headphones-, not as good as on my K812 or HD598. It is very similar to the soundstage of the Focal Elear.

The imaging on these is great, they have verticality and horizontality -which can be confusing at times-. I found the instrument separation and air great most of the times -they could get little claustrophobic very rarely.

Intro

As you probably seen on the "ABOUT US" page the creators of this website are a couple of twins. We were born and raised together, we were fortunate to grow up in a family where we always had a choice on what to like, what to believe in and what to do with our lives. We were always told, "life is what we make of it..."

Right now we arrived at a point in our life, where we would love to share the vast knowledge and experience accumulated throughout our life. Whenever we get interested in something we spend most of our free time committed to gain as much information as possible to be able to formulate a well educated opinion on given "thing". Being twins and have nearly identical interests gives us a tremendous advantage("two heads are better than one"). We can do research a lot faster(at least twice as fast) than one of us could possibly do. We read different articles and share the experience with each other -guaranteeing that both of us are equally informed. This way we can cross-reference information and filter out the non-sensible bits.

The first and most important influence on our life was video gaming, which started when we were about seven years old and got a NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) for our birthday. At that time we did not even know how to switch it on, so we had to wait about 3 months until we finally figured out how to connect it to our TV. -You might ask: Where were all the grown-ups? The answer is quite simple. really. They were growing up in an environment where technology was not important to be able to "get by" in your daily life.- That started a learning process in us that is ongoing since.

Video games made us interested in anime and English language- although we were studying English since first grade of primary school, we were never good or really interested in it-, the latter combined with the explosion in information tech -especially the World Wide Web- opened up a gate to vast knowledge and variety of interests.

What started out to be an interest in video games, developed an affinity towards everything that is tech and weird/nerdy. This means you can expect articles on video games, anime, cinema, music, audio-video equipment, events and photography. We will try to post as much and as soon as possible, but bear in mind that both of us are working on the side -at least for now- hehe!

This article pan out a little longer and more detailed than I wanted it to be, but with more posts everything will make more sense and will gain a good amount of context.

Questions, requests and constructive criticism are much appreciated.
